[Yes, Steve. He has to swear. Also Freddy's been through a good tumble through the woods and he looks like it with a scrape up his arm from wrist to elbow. He's got a cut on his knee from those claws but he didn't get bit. He throws a look over his shoulder at Cap.]

How you holdin' up? [That said to Steve before he glances to Larry too, looking over the old man to make sure he ain't hiding evisceration or something.]

[If it did, Steve isn't mentioning it. He's got his eyes on Freddy first, than on Mr. White, checking them out for serious injuries. It looks okay.]

Yeah, I'm all right. Just a few scratches.

[He huffs out a breath]

I think it was a wolverine or something.

That wasn't no wolverine. It was a moose without antlers.

[Big, bulky and ill-tempered. Could have been Nice Guy Eddie too. Larry's gonna keep that one to himself.]

[He wipes his brow with his sleeve.]

We're not making a second trip. This is it.

[He's with Larry on not making a second trip though. They're lucky the piece of shit attacked them at the point of reaching the car and not farther up where the car couldn't go--what's that sound? Something up ahead groans. If only Freddy thought about what way they were going when they got in the car and scrammed. Look out, that big old tree up ahead is coming down to crash on the path. Could be the wolverine's doing, could just be bad luck.]

Fuck! [Sweeeeeerrrrve. More unknown roads up ahead.]

[The wolverine is out to get them. At the swerve, the water jugs fling around the backseat; despite Cap's lightning-fast reaction he can't save them all by covering them with his body]

[At least he saves most of them]

[With only a few seconds of reaction time Larry puts both hands on the wheel and wrenches the steering wheel. Dirt flies and tires squeal as the car pulls parallel to the fallen tree and jolts toward the cliff.]

Fucking shit!

[Engine burning hot, there they are teetering far too close for comfort. What the fuck kind of a car is this anyway? It's acting like it's not meant for this sort of abuse. Finally they break. That all can't be because of the old man's foot. It feels as though they've caught on something. Good thing. Except at least one of the wheels are no longer in the air. Not good.]

Everybody just stay still a fucking moment.

[Life is flashing before his eyes. A life he never actually had but wants to have with a man named Lawrence Dimick. There's some kind of villa down in South America then a smaller but just as nice home in some northern state. Shit fuck fuck son of a bitch they're gonna fucking die.

When the car comes to a 'stop' Freddy's freckled hand is holding one of Larry's very very very very very very tightly.]

Fucking Christ. We're fucking alive.

[Don't look down Newendyke don't look down don't look down. The car isn't teetering, it seems petty damn stuck in the roots and rocks of something or other, but that doesn't comfort Freddy much at all.] We need to get out.

[Steve is moving on autopilot, the kind of movement that is training built on instinct, even though there are parts of him that are screaming for Bucky. He can't let that image stop him now; he has to make sure they all survive. He knows he weighs the most, so he shifts, carefully, to the side of the car on the ground.]

Orange, you get out first, then you, Mr. White. I'll hand you the water, and I'll get out last, and we'll see if we can save the car.

[He doesn't see Orange's hand on White's like it's gripping the gates of hell; it's not important, at this point]

[Big fingers curl around to grip at Freddy's hand just as tightly. ]

We're gonna be fine. [Why is he even saying this? What the fuck is the guarantee? Larry swallows but still finds it almost impossible to speak with an unstrangled voice. Listen to the captain. That sounds about right.]

Okay, kid. Easy now. I'll be right behind you.

[He'll be holding onto his hand until the last fucking second. All the old man knows is that he does not want either of them to die at this very moment.]

What?

[He heard you Steve, just, the whole staring into a rocky gorge is kind of, yeah. Okay okay Newendyke pull yourself together. Larry's voice is like some kind of ship horn in a storm. He snaps out of it and nods.]

Okay. [Almost said his name.] Okay...don't take too long.

[It takes a lot for Freddy to finally let go of Larry, then very carefully scurry his way to the blooded backseat and through a window. Like hell is he gonna pop a door open. But can the other two fit through one? That's the question. Might have to try a sun roof or pop the rear window or or...hey. They got rope.]

I can tie the axle or tow line. [He calls from the ground. One wrong move in doing that though could make the car drop. Hard decisions are hard.]

Tie the tow line, Mr. White, you hold on while he does that.

[Steve doesn't even push his shield out the window because that might be the level of weight keeping them there. He's not taking any risks]

Double hitch the knot, okay?

[Oh shit. Who has the bright idea to bring rope? Larry makes as best of a knot as he can. Hitch not. Fuck. Whatever it takes to keep them alive. He tries to keep his movements fluid. One wrong move. Shit.]

Okay. Got it.

[Push comes to shove, he'll listen to Steve. He's the fucking professional for this sort of bullshit.]

[On the outside Freddy finds another tree, this one alive and well, sturdy. The rope reaches well and when Larry's got the other end pulled taut he ties up this end, double hitched and whatever else Steve orders plus what Freddy knows from his own police training.]

Got it.

[He gestures thumbs up to Steve as well so as not to yell and cause any other mishap.]

Okay. Mr White, ease out slowly. Relax.

[He's parked himself pretty well, he's watching and waiting.]

[He tries out the guide line with just a touch then his fingers curl around slowly.]

Okay.

[Don't look down. Don't even breathe too hard. He keeps his eyes on Freddy standing by the tree. It's not that far. Moving each fraction of an inch at a time he feels the car shift a hair here, a hair there. How many hairs do they have left. Half way out of the car it makes a moaning sound, both paws hold on for dear life.]

Shit.

[Not too loud. Huff.]

Just keep comin', look at me, look at me right here.

[If Steve has a Cap voice then Freddy has a cawp voice. He's using it now but his sincerity is genuine. This is how you get people to step away from danger and he fucking wants Larry to survive. He's gesturing from the old man to his own dirty face.]

Keep doin' that and lookin' right here. Hold tight and come to me.

[Look at the kid coming closer to the car, one hand on the rope, the other reaching out to Lawrence Dimick.]

Just look at him, you'll be okay. Slide out, you're almost there.

[Cap is very calm, very pro. This is what he's built for]

I'm not gonna look anywhere else. I'm comin', baby.

[With every step you're gonna get farther away from death, Dimmy. Strain is making him sweat and his face is red because of it. They're gonna live through this and they're gonna be so fucking happy.

Larry has one leg, two legs out of the car and still going slowly now. He wants to just fucking run but holding onto the line connected to the car--who knows. It's balancing on a wing and a prayer. How is Captain American gonna get his ass out of this one?

One large shaking hand covers Freddy's as he finally reaches him and turns around.]

Made it.

[Now what?]

[It doesn't even occur to Freddy that Larry just called him baby. As soon as their fingertips touch he's pulling the old man even farther from the edge for a quick tight one-armed hug. The reunion is brief because he knows now it's Steve's turn. No matter how much super serum the guy has pumping in his veins he's still a human being. To Freddy Newendyke he's just like any other civilian, worth time effort and care. No, more like a fellow man in uniform.]

Can you make it, man? Fuck the water if it's gonna get you killed.

[They'll just go back and get more somehow. Yeah. He doesn't want Arthur to wallow away either but this is a more immediate danger.]

[He passes the shield over first: he might have a point about the water but his shield is something a little different. They might need it if they have to make their way down on foot.]

Here. Take this first.

[Once someone gets the shield, he starts making his way, carefully. He's conscious of his weight, but he's so careful that the car doesn't tilt when he gets out. He's thinking of Bucky, even though he doesn't want to.]

[The old man gets the shield. It's a heavy hunk of metal. Once that is out of the way he sets it aside.]

Come on. It's nothing, piece of cake.

[So he hopes. They have to keep moving. Who knows if it's only time that's keeping the car up. There is a strange sort of daze to the star spangled man. Larry takes it to be that he's reaching a sort of collected calm with the situation.]

We gotcha.

[The shield and Steve himself even though it's just as likely Steve can do it on his own. There's a bit of courtesy and ethics involved in helping out another guy when you're all in dire straits. Even if he's a super soldier.]

Damn. [Steve has a funny look to his eyes but Freddy won't push it.] Think we can save the car?

[And by saving the car, the water.]

[Steve looks at the car for a long minute, and takes the tow line and begins to tie it, carefully, to the car.]

I think so.

[His knots are perfect.]

Easy.

[The car makes that groan noise and slides a little.]

Take your time.

[Even though that may not be what they have. If they can save themselves and save themselves from doing it all over again, it would be wonderful.]

[It doesn't take long to understand what Steve's going to attempt. Even though he and Larry aren't super soldiers he's not going to stand back and watch. Just another glance at Larry then he gives a nod before approaching Cap to help pull the car back onto the ledge. You're coming too right Lawrence Dimick?]
